Stepping Out

Review

Little plot - plenty of laughs

This show is not overburdened with plot - in fact there almost isn't one - but it entertains superbly through the strength of the characters and the hilarious interplay between them.

It revolves around a group of novice dancers - all but one women - preparing for a big performance. At times it feels it should be called 'neuroses are us' as the assorted females dwell on their many insecurities. But there are laughs by the bucketload and the audience loved it. The characters are terrific and the acting is universally excellent: Sylvia is common and mouth; Andy is timid; Geoffrey is a meek trainspotter and piano player Mrs Fraser is sour and unforgiving. Best of all is probably Vera - played brilliantly by Sheila Elsdon - a posh, fussy lady who ends up having as many demons as the rest. It all makes for a great evenings entertainment. Until Saturday.
