The Jungle Book
Review
This entertaining show is faithful to the spirit of Kipling's classic, and quite rightly makes no attempt to reference the Disney film.
To tell the story of the man-cub Mowgli among the animals, HumDrum have combined actors portraying animals with puppetry.
Kaa the snake and Shere Khan the tiger were successfully portrayed by Mike Palmer and Vaughan Capstick respectively, and James George made a heart-warming but authoritative Baloo.
Shere Khan sported a particularly effective set of flashing claws. It was a nice touch to have the human puppets who populate Mowgli's village reflect the unreliable and amoral monkeys of the jungle, and the monkey puppets were particularly well handled.
Some of the animal actors didn't quite have the lithe athleticism that would make for convincing wolves, but nevertheless the world of the jungle was effectively created.
