The Suspicions of Mr Whicher is a compelling, atmospheric and intimate true-crime drama.
In 1860, three-year old Saville Kent is found murdered in his family home in Wiltshire. Detective Whicher investigates when a seemingly-impossible crime shatters the calm of an ordinary household. Kate Summerscale's adaptation of her own book stylishly blends flashbacks with tense prison scenes and shows how the people involved - family, neighbours, and investigators - seek for a truth as the weight of guilt and a hope of redemption affects their lives.
What begins as a baffling puzzle grows into a haunting exploration of memory, secrecy and the human need for certainty as it explores the Victorian fascination with secrets, sexuality and the emergence of the detective as a psychological analyst, rather than just a police officer.
